The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has congratulated Commander Matuwo I. Olufokunbi of the United States Navy on his historic achievement as the third Nigerian-American to assume command of a U.S. Navy warship.

In a message, NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described Commander Olufokunbi as a trailblazer and a source of inspiration to Nigerians at home and abroad.

He is the first Nigerian-American to qualify as a Nuclear Engineer under the elite and highly rigorous United States Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program.

In a statement issued by Gabriel Odu of the Media, Public Relations and Protocol Unit of the Commission, Dabiri-Erewa described these feats as “a source of pride and inspiration not only to Nigerians in the diaspora but also to the entire nation.”

She praised Commander Olufokunbi’s resilience, excellence, and pioneering spirit, which she said reflects the strength, ingenuity, and global competitiveness of Nigerians worldwide.

“This is a reflection of the Nigerian spirit of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Commander Olufokunbi’s outstanding success demonstrates once again that Nigerians in the diaspora are excelling in every field of human endeavor,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

The NiDCOM boss emphasised that his distinction in one of the most demanding programs within the U.S. military serves as a powerful testament to the quality, discipline, and capability of Nigerians on the global stage.

Dabiri-Erewa also used the opportunity to urge young Nigerians to draw inspiration from Commander Olufokunbi’s journey.

She reminded them that with determination and integrity, they can reach the pinnacle of any career, anywhere in the world.

Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to its mission of celebrating, supporting, and engaging with Nigerians abroad, whose continued achievements significantly uplift the image of the nation internationally.
