The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated Capt. Kelechi Ndukwe on his elevation to Commodore of the Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 60 and Commander of Task Force (CTF) 65 of the United States Navy, based in Rota, Spain.

Dr Dabiri-Erewa described Commander Ndukwe’s appointment as a remarkable personal milestone and a source of pride for Nigeria, the global naval community, and Nigerians worldwide.

“In his new role, he will oversee U.S. Navy destroyer operations across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean, reflecting his exceptional service record, leadership, and dedication to strengthening international maritime security and cooperation,” the NIDCOM CEO said in a statement.

The statement reads: “Ndukwe has consistently excelled throughout his career, notably making history in April 2021 as the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97).

“His journey -from the son of Nigerian immigrants to one of the U.S. Navy’s highest-ranking officers—stands as a testament to resilience, discipline, and excellence.

NIDCOM reiterated its commitment to celebrating and supporting Nigerians in the diaspora who embody hard work, integrity, and global impact.

According to the statement, “Commander Ndukwe’s achievement highlights the immense potential of Nigerians around the world and the positive contributions of the diaspora community.”
