The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on Nigerians at home and abroad to remain united and steadfast following recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump describing Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
In a statement issued by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, Dr. Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians in the diaspora to stay calm and continue to project the country’s positive image.
She noted that the Nigerian Government, through President Bola Tinubu and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has provided official responses addressing the matter, assuring that Nigeria remains committed to peace, unity, and constructive international engagement.
She emphasised that Nigeria was a nation founded on tolerance, diversity, and democratic values, rejecting any claims suggesting that the country engages in religious persecution.
“The conspiracy theory portraying Nigeria as a country killing Christians is not a true reflection of our reality. Nigeria remains steadfast in upholding democracy, religious freedom, and the protection of all citizens.” She said
The NiDCOM Chairman also noted that President Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to religious liberty and mutual respect among all faiths.
She also referenced the strong statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which dismissed the U.S. classification as misinformed and unrepresentative of the situation on the ground.
Dr. Dabiri-Erewa appealed to Nigerians in the diaspora to speak out against such misconceptions and continue to support national unity and the country’s image globally.
“There are indeed security challenges caused by evil terrorists in some parts of the country. But what President Trump and the international community should do is to support Nigeria’s efforts in defeating these criminals — not falsely denigrate our country.” She said.
