Niger Junta Announces Five-Year Transition to Civilian Rule
Niger’s ruling junta has declared a five-year transition to constitutional rule, starting from Wednesday, as part of a newly signed transition charter.
The announcement follows the 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. Similar to military rulers in Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger’s junta expelled French and other European forces, instead seeking support from Russia in its fight against militant groups.
The five-year timeline aligns with recommendations made in February by a commission following national consultations.
