Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari has commended the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, for acting fast on the military action in the neighbouring Niger Republic, where democracy has been disrupted.
In a message, issued by his Spokesperson, Garba Shehu, the former leader commended his successor, President Bola Tinubu for leading ECOWAS in the right direction on how to tackle the situation in Niger.
Buhari, who prayed for the well-being of the ousted President of Niger, Mohammed Bazoum, also expressed optimism that the situation in the Niger Republic would be reversed soon.
He said; “It is heartening to note that the ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is already dealing effectively with the matter and our hope and prayers are that the unwanted situation will be completely reversed and the safety and well-being of President Bazoum and his family are ensured.”
Former President Buhari also said he is shocked by the military takeover in Nigerien Republic, and prayed for the sustenance of democracy in West Africa.
He said; “As to be expected, I, just like millions of other Nigerians, am shocked by the latest turn of events in Niger Republic, our neighbor to the North.
“Concerns have been raised about the fate of democracy as a system of government in the country and the wider region, and equally so, about the safety of President Mohammed Bazoum and his family.
“I and my family are as much concerned about these as everyone else.”
