The Niger State Government is planning to upgrade the facilities of the state owned Bako Kontagora Stadium to meet up with the requirements of hosting Premier League matches in Nigeria.
Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, stated this while addressing the media in Minna, the state capital.
Governor Bello said that the Niger Tornadoes, the state own professional football club, will be placed to its rightful position when the stadium upgrades are completed. He stated that the stadium infrastructure is critical and needs a first lift to accommodate professional leagues.
“I want to believe we will give the stadium attention but it all depends on resources, as a matter of fact, if our resources improve our inflow improves, we should be thinking of completing a new stadium in Maikunkule,” Governor Bello said.
“If we have the resources, I think we will resume work at the abandoned ultra modern stadium at Maikunkule to enable us have a befitting sporting facility.”
The Niger state Governor, who expressed delight at the promotion of the team back to the elite division, noted that the government is determined towards ensuring that youth are given the right opportunity to express their God given talents.
“Am very pleased with the performance of Niger Tornadoes and want to see how the Bako Kontagora memorial stadium can host their home matches,” Bello added.
“The team ( Tornadoes) has been doing very well, as a government we will support them to play their matches at home.”
The Niger Tornadoes are to play their league matches at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna state due to the deplorable condition of the Bako Kontagora memorial stadium in Minna.
