The Niger State government has reaffirmed its commitment to involving legionnaires in the state’s Social Investment programmes, viewing it as a duty to the country and its residents.

Governor Umar Mohammed Bago stated this during the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the 123 Parade Ground in Minna, the state capital.

Represented by his Deputy Comrade Yakubu Garba, Governor Bago outlined plans to engage people of various ages through a ministry for micro and small-scale enterprises.

He assured the public that the government is dedicated to addressing issues of aging and poverty, pledging support to retired military officers.

The State is planning to engage the services of legionnaires in the area of security, leveraging the experience of army retirees,” Governor Bago said.

In his speech, the State Legion Niger Chairman, Malam Mahmud Baba Ahamad commended the Governor’s unprecedented address, saying “We have hope that the government would fulfill its promises, especially in employing trained cadets.”

He urged the government to redeem pledges made to support the legionnaires.

A widow, Khadija Usman, appealed to the State government to assist families of fallen heroes, acknowledging the challenges they face without their husbands.

She expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts and requested continued support for those left behind by the heroes.

The event witnessed the presence of top military officers, including the Commissioner of Police Niger State, Commandant Federal Road Safety, Civil Defence, Nigerian Customs, and Immigration officers.
