The Niger State government in North central Nigeria has presented relief materials worth N40m to victims of the recent flood victims in Kontagora town of Kontagora Local government Area.
Governor Abubakar Bello who facilitated the distribution of the items to the victims to ameliorate their sufferings also directed them to move out of their present abodes and relocate to Safer grounds.
The Governor noted that the failure of the affected people to move out of the flood area may expose them to similar experiences before the end of the rainy season.
“The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET, predictions on the rainfall pattern this year should not be ignored to avoid suffering unnecessary disaster,” Governor Bello stated.
The Governor was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Kabir Musa.
The distribution of the items took place at the Palace of the Emir of Kontagora, His Royal Highness Alhaji Mu’azu Barau. It was supervised by the Commissioner for Works Alhaji Sani Lafya and the Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency Alhaji Ahmed Inga.
The Emir of Kontagora expressed gratitude to the government for the gesture saying “the sharing of the relief items showed the government cares to improve the conditions the flood victims are.”
He was represented by the Madakin Kontagora, Alhaji Aminu Ahmed.
The items distributed are; “Three hundred 50kg bags of rice, 200 bags of maize, 150 25liters gallons of palm and 150 gallons of vegetable oil, 600 textile materials, 300 blankets, 300 mats, 50 bags of Salts and 50 cartons of Maggi.”
Reports show that two people lost their lives while not less than 150 houses were destroyed in the flood.
