Niger Tornadoes FC are set to start its Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign as they face off against Abia Warriors, at the Abia Township Stadium on Saturday.
Under the guidance of Technical Adviser, Hamza Abdulazeez Abarah and his skilled Technical Crew, the team concluded its rigorous preparations last week. Their pre-season activities included competitions held at Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, Kontagora in Niger State and an invitational Pre-Season Unity Cup in Kano.
The new management committee, led by Ibrahim Dada Maikunkele, has emphasised the need for a formidable squad capable of competing at the highest level of Nigeria’s top flight league.
As the NPFL leadership, headed by Gbenga Elegbeleye and the nation’s football governing body have set September 30th, 2023, as the kickoff date for the new league season, Niger Tornadoes, like other top-flight teams, will strive for supremacy in the premier league.
Notably, some clubs will play their home matches away from their usual venues, with Niger Tornadoes opting to host their home games in Kaduna, while Lobi Stars will call the Lafia Stadium their temporary home.
Established in 1977, Niger Tornadoes FC is one of the oldest football clubs in the country. Over the years, it has been a symbol of resilience and achievement.

Notable clubs like Kano Pillars (formerly Raccah Rovers), Ranchers Bees (formerly DiC Kaduna), Golden Stars of Kano, Club 50, Enugu Rangers, Sharks of Port Harcourt,and Stationery Stores of Lagos are examples of teams with rich histories in the league, often owned by their respective State governments.
