Nigeria Approves Funds For Purchase of Seeds, Soil Test Kits in 2022

To boost agricultural production in the country, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the sum of N2.4 billion for the procurement of seeds of various crops for the farmers in 2022.

The Council also approved over N1billion for the purchase of soil test kits.

Speaking to Journalists at the end of this week’s cabinet meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of State for Agriculture, Mustapha Shehuri said the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) presented two memos.

He said the memos include the approval for the award of contracts to agricultural institutes and research agencies for the production and distribution of seeds and seedlings to farmers.

According to him, approval has been obtained for the project which would gulp N2,164,702,006.78.

Shehuri said the development would help the research institutes produce seeds for farmers, to aid them in the next farming season.

Furthermore, he said, “The second memo was for an approval for the award of contract for the purchase of 1014 soil test kits and soil laboratory analytical equipment for the National Institute of Soil Science at the cost of N278,008,581.63, and council approved it.”

The minister said the two approvals would go a long way to enhance agricultural activities across the country.
