Nigeria attends Stockholm+50 Conference, highlights pollution, management of chemicals, others

The High Level Segment of the Conferences to the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam & Stockholm Conventions is underway in Sweden, with Nigeria as a party.

This is the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention and the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention.

The Conference (June 2- June 3) also heralds the Stockholm+50 International meeting, which is about reflecting, connecting, and accelerating urgent action.

The theme for Stockholm50 is “A Healthy Planet for Prosperity of all- Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity.

Nigeria will be making a strong case on pollution, afforestation and regulatory use of chemicals.

Barr. Mohammed Abdullahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, who is attending the Conference, called for stakeholder engagement, development of national guidelines on safe handling, labelling, transport, storage, use and disposal of chemicals & waste and the domestication of the @brsmeas Conventions and protocol.

“I also informed the meeting of Nigeria’s co-ordinated approach by establishing a National Committee on Chemicals Management, Technical Co-ordinating Committee, which ensures cost-efficient measures towards chemical safety and management and regulations,” said Abdullahi via Tweeter.
