Nigeria bans exportation of charcoal, suspends forest product

The Nigerian government has banned the exportation of charcoal and suspend Forest product in the country.
The Minister of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Mahmod stated this in Abuja the nation’s capital while briefing journalist on the outcome of the meeting with COP26 President, Mr Alok Sharma, to know the country’s level of preparation and expectation, ahead of COP26, coming up in November 2021.
Dr. Mahmod said Nigeria remain committed to continue with its plans on climate Change.
“Charcoal production is very destructive to the environment and causes destruction of the climate and increases global warming,” he said.
He said the country was reducing the capacity of the planet to absorbed the already emitted greenhouse gases.
He added that burning of charcoal also produce the very emission the country’s has committed to reduce.
The Minister also said that the government was also committed to keeping its pledge during the Paris Agreement, where it committed twenty percent reduction in emission, by the year 2020 which he said the country has achieved.
