The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, have expressed satisfaction on the bilateral relationship officially established in 1961, and stated their commitment to deepen it.
The pledge was made when President Tinubu paid a State Visit to Lula da Silva in Brasília, Brazil.
The Nigerian President’s visit intensifies bilateral relations previously touched on at the 37th African Union Summit; in November 2024, during the G20 Summit; and in July 2025, at the BRICS Summit.
During the meeting held in Brasília, the Presidents reviewed key issues in the bilateral relationship and in their respective regional contexts, as well as other matters of relevance on the international agenda.
The Presidents highlighted the signing of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement and its Memorandum of Understanding, which will allow for connectivity and promote trade and tourism between the two countries.
Both Presidents also signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, on Political Consultations, Training of Diplomats and Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation.
They welcomed deepened cooperation in agriculture, MSMEs and banking.
They also reaffirmed the shared commitment of Brazil and Nigeria to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related forms of intolerance, in line with the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
They recognised joint efforts in maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, taking note of the participation of both countries in regional maritime exercises such as GUINEX, Obangame Express, and Grand African Nemo.
