The Nigerian government has inaugurated the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) first-ever barracks in Yola, Adamawa State, North eastern Nigeria.
This new facility, which provides residential and office accommodations for NDLEA personnel, signifies the government’s commitment to improving the welfare and security of officers dedicated to combating drug trafficking and abuse.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi.
He emphasised that the barracks represents not just a structural milestone but a critical investment in human capital, aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of strengthening national security institutions.
Fagbemi remarked that the fight against drug abuse is vital for the nation’s future, describing the barracks as both a “fortress of resilience” and a symbol of hope for a safer society.
He urged NDLEA officers to view the improved welfare as a call to higher responsibility, reinforcing the notion that justice starts with those who enforce it.
NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), highlighted the barracks’ importance, particularly in safeguarding officers who have previously been exposed to risks without dedicated housing.
He noted that the absence of secure accommodations had led to some officers being targeted and killed. The new facility offers much-needed security and stability for personnel and their families.
The facility, built on an 18-hectare site in Numan Yola Road, includes modern administrative buildings, a detention center, secure storage for drug exhibits, and residential accommodations.
These comprise 80 one-bedroom flats, 120 two-bedroom flats, and 60 three-bedroom flats, as well as a perimeter fence, watchtowers, a parade ground, and backup power supply.
Dignitaries at the event included Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, members of the National Assembly, and traditional rulers. Governor Fintiri praised the facility, noting that it symbolises Nigeria’s collective determination to protect youth and society from the dangers of illicit drugs.
Ribadu reaffirmed the Federal government’s commitment to bolstering security institutions and lauded the role of the NDLEA in fighting drug trafficking.
The inauguration of the NDLEA barracks represents a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against drug abuse and trafficking. With improved security and operational efficiency, the facility is expected to enhance the agency’s capacity to safeguard communities and contribute to a drug-free future for the country.
