Nigeria has pledged an unwavering commitment to embracing green energy technology as part of the move towards sustainable development amidst a global call for action to combat climate change.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Ambassador Nicholas Agbo Ella, stated this in a message at the Germany-Nigerian Energy Transition Dialogue in Abuja, Nigeria.

The dialogue is organised by the German-Nigerian Hydrogen Office in collaboration with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany on the occasion of the State visit to Nigeria by Jennifer Morgan, the State Secretary and Special Envoy for International Climate Action at the German Federal Foreign Office.

Ambassador Ella represented by the Director, Upstream Department, Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Kamoru Busari, said Nigeria is a critical stakeholder in the world’s energy transition due to its abundant natural resources, especially sunlight, enough for hydrogen production.

He noted that this is the reason Nigeria is taking seriously its commitment to green energy technology and ensuring it incorporates hydrogen into the energy mix beyond the use of gas

Mr. Busari disclosed that efforts are ongoing to uptake local hydrogen projects, which will help unlock additional gas investment, create more jobs and increase the nation’s GDP.

He disclosed that, as part of efforts to achieve net zero emission by 2060, Nigeria is committed to ending gas flaring by 2030.
