The Nigerian Government has condemned, in the strongest terms, the attempted forcible seizure of power in the Republic of Benin in the early hours of Sunday, 7 December 2025.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Kimiebi Ebienfa, stressed that any act of destabilisation constitutes a direct assault on democracy, constitutional order, and the collective will of the Benin people, who have consistently upheld peaceful political transitions.

Nigeria reaffirmed its firm solidarity with the government and people of the Republic of Benin and commended the swift action taken by Beninese authorities to safeguard legitimate institutions and preserve national stability.

The statement further applauded the courage and professionalism of the Beninese security forces in defending the constitutional order and ensuring the safety of the president, noting that their dedication ensured that the unfortunate attempt to subvert democracy was decisively repelled.

Reiterating its unwavering commitment to democracy, good governance, and the rule of law as essential foundations for peace, development, and regional stability, Nigeria stressed that unconstitutional changes of government are “unacceptable and retrogressive, posing serious threats to the democratic gains and socioeconomic progress achieved across the sub-region.

Nigeria also urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union, and the international community to unite in condemning the coup attempt and to reaffirm their shared commitment to the African Union Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance as well as the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

The government called on all parties in the Republic of Benin to remain calm, respect the rule of law, and pursue political dialogue through peaceful, constitutional, and democratic channels.

Nigeria concluded by assuring the Government of the Republic of Benin of its full support and continued cooperation, reaffirming its resolve to work together as neighbours and partners to deepen democracy and promote lasting peace and prosperity across the West African region.
