The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health has reassured the public that the newly detected COVID-19 variant, XEC, has not been identified in the country, urging citizens to remain calm and adhere to health guidelines.

In a press release issued by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, the Ministry addressed recent rumours regarding the variant’s presence in the country, describing them as false and misleading.

The clarification comes in response to a letter circulating in the public domain, dated December 5, 2024, which has raised concerns among citizens.

The variant XEC, first reported in Australia, has spread to 29 countries and is deemed more transmissible than existing strains. However, the Ministry confirmed that there is currently no evidence of its occurrence in Nigeria.

To ensure public safety, the Ministry has intensified surveillance efforts, particularly at entry points into the country. Federal tertiary hospitals have been upgraded with molecular laboratories, isolation centres, and intensive care units equipped with ventilators to prepare for any potential outbreaks.

“We advise the general public not to panic but to continue observing universal precautions such as regular handwashing and maintaining personal hygiene,” the statement emphasised.

The ministry reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s healthcare system to effectively combat emerging infectious diseases and safeguard public health.

It also emphasised its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services while addressing misinformation surrounding the resurgence of COVID-19 in the country.

Citizens are urged to disregard baseless rumours and proceed with their daily activities without undue concern.
