Nigeria has congratulated the government and the people of Angola on the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary, reiterating its commitment to African solidarity and continental progress.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, extended the felicitation to his Angolan counterpart, Teté António, on Tuesday.
In a statement signed by Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Ambassador Tuggar described Angola’s commemoration of the Anniversary “as a strong testament to ‘the resilience, unity, and determination’ of the people in ‘their pursuit of freedom, peace, and national development’.
Recalling Nigeria’s contributions as a “steadfast partner” to Angola’s independence struggle, Mr. Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the shared values of independence, progress, and African solidarity on the continent.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Nigeria and Angola continue to enjoy cordial and mutually beneficial relations, strengthened through cooperation in key sectors, including trade, energy, security, and multilateral engagements.
A recent demonstration of this partnership was the signing of multiple agreements during the latest session of the Nigeria/Angola Joint Commission held in Luanda. Both countries also maintain close collaboration within the framework of the African Union (AU).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further expressed appreciation to the Angolan Government for recently recognising three distinguished Nigerians: the late Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed; former President Olusegun Obasanjo; and renowned diplomat, Professor Ibrahim Gambari.
The awards, presented in Luanda by President João Manuel Lourenço, acknowledged Nigeria’s decisive role in the Angolan liberation struggle and its enduring commitment to African solidarity and Pan-Africanism.
Call for Deeper Partnership
On this auspicious occasion, Nigeria reaffirmed its readiness to deepen bilateral relations with Angola, explore new areas of partnership, and promote greater people-to-people ties for the mutual benefit of both nations.
“Once again, Nigeria conveys her warmest felicitations to the Government and people of the Republic of Angola, with best wishes for continued peace, prosperity, and national advancement,” the statement reads.
