The Nigerian government, in collaboration with the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) led by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has distributed 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South East region as part of a national effort to strengthen maternal and child healthcare.

At a distribution ceremony held in Enugu, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, said the initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Health Agenda.

According to him, 60,000 kits have now been distributed nationwide, benefitting 40% of Nigeria’s approximately 154,000 registered midwives.

“The items in these kits represent our collective commitment to preserving life, promoting dignity, and ensuring healthier outcomes for Nigerian women and children,” Dr Salako stated.

He also commended the First Lady for her tireless advocacy through the RHI, praising her efforts in promoting maternal and child health, immunisation, menstrual hygiene, and nutrition.

In recognition of her commitment, the health sector formally designated Senator Tinubu as “Chief Public Health Champ.”

As part of her visit, the First Lady announced the launch of the “Free to Shine Triple Elimination Campaign” in Enugu State, aimed at eliminating HIV/AIDS, syphilis, and hepatitis, with a focus on preventing mother-to-child transmission and reducing new infections.

The First Lady also revealed financial support measures for women in the region.

The RHI will provide ₦50 million to support 1,000 women petty traders in Enugu State with ₦50,000 each to recapitalise their businesses.

In addition, the Tony Elumelu Foundation will contribute another ₦50 million to assist 500 petty traders.

She expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah, his wife Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, and other stakeholders for their commitment to healthcare development in Nigeria.

In her remarks, Mrs Mbah emphasised the essential role of midwives in reducing maternal and under-five mortality rates.

“The distribution of 10,000 professional kits—comprising Scrubs and Crocs—to our dedicated midwives across every zone is a significant boost to strengthening our healthcare system.

“This thoughtful gesture is a powerful affirmation of the value and dignity we place on our healthcare professionals.

“You haven’t simply voiced your ideals, Ma; you have also put them into action. This is a true reflection of transformative leadership,” she said.

Dr Salako also highlighted broader achievements under the Renewed Hope Health Agenda, including the recruitment of over 15,000 health professionals, the training of more than 60,000 frontline health workers, the upgrade of over 1,000 Primary Health Centres, and the vaccination of over 14 million girls against HPV.

He called on all Nigerians, especially healthcare professionals, to support the Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure that no woman dies while giving life and no child is denied the chance to thrive.
