Nigeria has extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of The Gambia as the country marks its Independence Day, commemorating the attainment of sovereignty in 1965.
In a goodwill message issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, conveyed the nation’s felicitations to his Gambian counterpart, Sering Modou Njie.
He described the occasion as a celebration of The Gambia’s enduring commitment to democratic governance, national unity and sovereignty.
The statement noted that as Gambians celebrate the historic milestone with national festivities and parades, Nigeria stands in solidarity with the resilient and aspirational people of The Gambia, recognising their democratic journey over the decades.
Nigeria and The Gambia share a longstanding fraternal relationship anchored in common history, cultural affinity and shared membership of regional and global organisations, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).
Both countries have continued to work closely in advancing democratic values, regional stability and economic integration in West Africa.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted the strong bilateral cooperation between Abuja and Banjul, spanning political engagement, security collaboration, trade, education and technical assistance.
He noted that these partnerships align with broader regional objectives, including peacebuilding, democratic consolidation and integration efforts under ECOWAS and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to deepening relations, the Minister underscored the importance of expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest and strengthening people-to-people ties that reflect African solidarity and shared progress.
On the occasion, the Government and people of Nigeria wished The Gambia continued peace, democratic stability and sustainable development as it advances on its national journey.
