Nigeria Fencing Federation Partners Italy To Advance Development
The Nigeria Fencing Federation (NFF) has signed a four-year protocol agreement with the Italian Fencing Federation (Federazione Italiana Scherma, FIS) to enhance the development of fencing in Nigeria. The agreement, aimed at technical support and knowledge transfer, was formalized during the International Fencing Federation’s congress in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, described the partnership as a major milestone for the growth of the sport in Nigeria. Paolo Azzi, President of FIS, expressed optimism about the collaboration, noting that it will significantly accelerate the progress of Nigerian fencing.
Under the agreement, the Italian federation will organize international knowledge transfer initiatives and provide technical support. This includes sending Italian coaches, referees, and specialists to Nigeria to conduct training courses. FIS will also promote meetings, exchanges, and other initiatives to foster greater interaction between Nigerian and Italian fencers.
“We are thrilled to be making substantial efforts to enhance the sport by organizing top-class events and seeking technical support from leading fencing nations like Italy. This agreement will facilitate knowledge transfer to our technical officials, adding value to our sport,” said Samuel.
The partnership comes ahead of the Men’s Junior Epee Fencing World Cup, set to take place on December 14-15 in Lagos, marking the first time a Sub-Saharan African country will host a fencing World Cup.
Samuel emphasized the importance of public and private sector support to maximize the benefits of the partnership and further develop fencing in Nigeria.
