Nigeria frowns at impunity against Journalists

The Nigerian government has reiterated the desire not to tolerate any form of impunity against Journalists and other institutions in the country.

 

It also, called on Journalists in the country to be patriotic in the discharge of their legitimate responsibility for the promotion of peace, Democracy and development.

 

Nigeria’s Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami made this known at a policy dialogue on the protection of Journalists to mark the 2021 International Day to end impunity for Crimes against journalist in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital.

 

The Justice Minister who described Journalists as next to the three arms of government said, “Nigerian government has laudable initiatives for the protection of crimes against journalist in the country, through several reforms such as access to easy justice.

 

“The Nigerian Government has taken steps in advancing the rule of law, application of human rights, enhancing the freedom of information and by implication, freedom of the press as well as the administration of criminal justice. 

 

In addition to the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act, prominent among recent legislations by the present administration included Public Interest Disclosure and Witness Protection Bill (2017).

 

“With this development, the Nigerian government is resolute because there was no room for complacency in ensuring serene online and offline atmosphere of journalism practice in the country.” Malami added.

 

Also, the Minister of Information and Culture Mr. Lai Muhammed represented by Mr. Sunday Baba stressed the need for the protection and safety of Journalist while performing their work.

 

He said, issues on attacks and intimidation on journalist should be investigated” for the progress of the profession.”

 

Workable Mechanism

The Acting Solicitor General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Umar said the  aim of the policy dialogue was to brainstorm with relevant stakeholders and come up with workable mechanism to safeguard Journalist.

 

He said,The Nigerian Government is committed to support journalists in discharging their social and their constitutionally guaranteed responsibility through the provision of enabling atmosphere for quality journalism practice.”

 

He identified Journalism as crucial element in the advancement of the society.

 

The representative of the European Union Mr. Clement Boutllier commended Nigeria for prioritising Free Press and safety of Journalists.

 

He reaffirmed EU’s commitment to the protection of Journalist for the promotion of free press.

 

Ending Impunity

A paper on ending impunity for Crimes against journalist in Nigeria was presented by the Vice Chancellor Federal University Gombe, Professor Umaru Pate.

 

The International Day to end impunity for Crimes against Journalists is a day that draws attention to the level of impunity for crimes against journalists, which remains extremely high globally.

 

Ending impunity for crimes against journalists is one of the most pressing issues to guarantee freedom of expression and access to information for all citizens.

 

Records have shown that between 2006 and 2020, over 1,200 journalists have been killed for reporting the news and bringing information to the public.
