Nigeria Health Ministry Condemns alleged Kidney Trafficking

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health has issued a stern response to the alarming report published by the Daily Trust Newspaper exposing the illicit “Kidney Market” thriving in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, the nations capital.

In a statement by the Director of Media & Public Relations, Patricia Deworitshe, the ministry emphasizes the illegality of such activities, citing the National Health Act (NHA), 2014 Sections 51-56, which strictly prohibits kidney trafficking.

“Offenders, including sellers, buyers, and medical practitioners involved, will face severe legal consequences, including fines up to N1,000,000, imprisonment of not less than two years, or both,” it said.

The report ttled “Inside Abuja’s Kidney Market where the Rich prey on the Poor in the FCT,” has ignited serious concerns as the Ministry condemns the barbaric and inhuman criminal practice of kidney trafficking revealed in the article.

The ministry said the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), is actively investigating the allegations against medical practitioners engaged in these reprehensible activities.

“The Ministry asserts its commitment to improving regulatory standards to ensure a more effective and efficient healthcare system in line with the renewed hope agenda,” it added.

The Federal Ministry strongly advises the public against engaging in illegal kidney trade. Instead, they urged individuals to report any information that can lead to the arrest of perpetrators by contacting the Ministry at 08033228978.

“Donation of kidneys is stressed to be on informed consent, based on medical advice, with privileged information about the process to save lives,” it said.

The ministry affirms its commitment to safeguarding public health and underscores the importance of collective efforts to eradicate this heinous practice.

“The public is urged to remain vigilant, support regulatory measures, and contribute to the ongoing fight against illegal kidney trafficking,” it added.
