The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a 0-0 draw by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in their second International friendly match at the Stadion Weiner Neustadt in Vienna on Tuesday.

Gernot Rohr’s men had lost 1-0 to the same opponent last Friday and were seeking revenge going into the encounter. The German tactician made two changes to the side that started on Friday with Ahmed Musa and Valentine Ozornwafor coming in for Oghenekaro Etebo and William Troost Ekong respectively.

The Indomitable Lions dominated the early exchanges and nearly took the lead in the opening minutes, but Everton’s Alex Iwobi cleared the ball off the line. At the other end, Iwobi threaded a ball through for Paul Onuachu, but the Genk forward failed to direct his shot on target.

Cameroon had a goal cancelled for offside late in the first half as the Super Eagles struggled to gain a foothold on the game.

Terem Moffi replaced Onuachu after the break as Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr attempted to add more firepower to the attack. However, Moffi wasted a glorious chance to put Nigeria ahead in the 50th minute shooting wide from inside the box.

Abraham Marcus took the place of Moses Simon in the 67th minute, while Anayo Iwuala replaced Ahmed Musa 10 minutes later. Moments later, Kelechi Iheanacho missed Nigeria’s best chance of the game 13 minutes from time when he was sent through on goal by Iwobi, but his shot was saved by the goalkeeper.

The referee blew the final whistle and the game ended 0-0.

Gernot Rohr’s team lacked bite and the clinical edge when it mattered, and the result leaves Rohr with just five wins in 19 friendly games since he took over as Nigeria’s coach.

Rohr has a lot of work to do to prepare his team for the second round of the African Qualifiers for the World Cup of Qatar 2022, as the Super Eagles have been lacking team chemistry in order to dispatch their opponents.

Next up for the Super Eagles is another friendly game against Mexico at the Los Angeles Coliseum on July 4.
