The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), has expressed its determination to effectively manage the Nigerian borders, migration processes and secure the nation’s territorial integrity.
Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap stated this at a three-day conference in Jos, Plateau State where they deliberated on the possible ways of effective border control and management.
The Conference had as its theme ‘Enhancing Border Security and Migration Management in a Globalized World, Challenges and Opportunities for Nigeria’.
The theme had three broad objectives which include; assessing the current state and preparedness of the NIS to meet its statutory mandate, identifying emerging challenges and opportunities in Border Governance and Migration Management, and developing sustainable strategies for repositioning the NIS towards enhancing National Security and Economic interests.
The three-day Conference and Technical Sessions were conducted in plenary, including syndicate group (4) presentations, and a peer-to-peer learning exercise.
Extracts from proceedings identified the need to implement sustainable cross-cutting reforms that guarantee seamless service delivery by a well-motivated and dedicated workforce.
Conference Resolution
The Conference also came up with seven key resolutions stating that NIS shall;
1. Continue to collaborate and synergize with relevant Agencies and Stakeholders.
2. Shall sustain the deployment of relevant cutting-edge technology to improve Border Security and migration Management through automated Visa Issuance and Passport application processes.
3. Shall draw up a strategic plan that aligns with the FGN’s initiatives on Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) and Tourism that will attract improved funding.
4. Shall restructure and improve operations at the Divisional Immigration Offices, in all 774 LGAs to strengthen intelligence gathering and proactive engagement with border communities in Nigeria.
5. Shall in line with the tenets of the Renewed Hope Agenda, engage in further process re-engineering, and develop a strategic plan to promote professionalism, patriotism, discipline, and seamless service delivery.
6. Shall continue to sustain the inbuilt motivation of staff as a priority objective, including training and capacity building for Officers and Men to enhance knowledge acquisition and professionalism.
7. Shall prioritize the need to have a robust health insurance policy and pension package for retired officers.
The Comptroller General of NIS, Kemi Nandap appreciated the participants and stated that the Service will upon resolutions made deploy proactive strategies and sustainable reforms to reposition the Service towards delivering on its statutory mandate and enhance National Security.
The NIS Management and other Conference participants appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Interior for their collective efforts towards repositioning the Nigerian Immigration Service.
In attendance were 448 participants and delegates from diverse backgrounds.
