The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched its third nationwide sensitisation and awareness campaign to ensure efficient service delivery through zero tolerance for corruption.

Flagging off the campaign in Abuja, the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, stated that this year’s theme, “Increased Digitalization and Consolidated Innovations for Efficient and Transparent Services,” resonates deeply with the commitment to transform the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) into a corruption-free organisation.

Nandap noted that the Nigeria Immigration Service plays a pivotal role in national security, border management and facilitation of regular migration.

“Our responsibility is immense, and our actions significantly impact the Image of Nigeria. Therefore, ensuring integrity, transparency, and efficiency in our operations is not just a duty but a necessity,” she said.

She emphasised that corruption is a menace that undermines the very fabric of society, erodes trust, discourages investment, and impedes their collective progress, saying that the NIS has been working tirelessly to eliminate corruption and ensure efficient service delivery.

“Last year, we made a firm commitment to mitigate corruption in all its form. It is on this basis that we engaged in an increased digitalization and consolidated innovations to improve Service Delivery and eliminate corruption in the Service,” Nandap remarked.

The Comptroller General emphasised that one of its flagship initiatives is the Passport Automation Program, an innovation she said has significantly reduced the processing time for passports, making it easier and more convenient for Nigerians to obtain their travel documents.

“But that’s not all, our automation program has also eliminated the opportunities for corruption that existed in the manual process, due to increased human interface,” she noted.

Another critical component of their anti-corruption strategy she said is the Contactless Passport Application Process, an innovation that enables Nigerians to submit their applications online, eliminating physical contact with its officers, which makes the process more efficient and also shuts out any avenue for corruption.

“The introduction of e-gates in Nigeria is a significant step towards enhancing security, streamlining airport processes, and improving overall travel experiences. These e-gates are designed to facilitate efficient and secure passenger processing, reducing the need for manual intervention and minimizing the risk of corruption,” she stated.

Additionally, the Comptroller noted that the introduction of body cameras by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is a significant step towards enhancing transparency and accountability in our operations, stating that the use of body cameras is a solution to curb brutality, enhance evidence gathering and documentation, and rebuild public trust in the Service, which can provide firsthand evidence in criminal investigations, serve as crucial evidence in legal proceedings and help to validate witness accounts.

She remarked that the service is on the verge of introducing an electronic visa (e-Visa) to make it easier for travellers to visit Nigeria.
