The Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), says Nigeria and Japan have enjoyed many years of cordial bilateral relations, especially in the area of trade and are seeking more ways to strengthen their ties.
The Director-General of NIIA, Professor Eghosa Osaghae stated this at a one-day Ambassadorial forum held in Lagos with the theme; ‘Japan–Nigeria Relations’.
According to the Director-General, Nigeria and Japan have maintained diplomatic relations since Nigeria’s independence in 1960 and high level office holders had regular visits to each other to strengthen economic ties.
Professor Osaghae said that trade balance between the two countries is very good, looking at Japanese cars everywhere in Nigeria and their purchase of Nigeria’s crude oil.
He noted that Japan and Nigeria have looked into developing further trade ties by creating organizations such as the Japan-Nigeria Business Facilitation Council which is aimed at increasing the volume of trade between them.
Similarly, Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Matsunaga Kazuyoshi, said the Japan’s scholarship program is open to Nigerians adding that every year, about one thousand Nigerian students apply for the programme.
He also mentioned ways which Japan can assist Nigeria especially in area of digital transformation.
