The Nigerian Government has launched additional financing for the Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP) to extend interventions plans in the North-Eastern States.
The Project which is funded by the World Bank and overseen by the North East Development Commission seeks additional funding for humanitarian interventions in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States which are the most affected states in the region.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social development, Sadiya Umar Farouq said the Project will provide humanitarian and long term economic recovery for the region.
According to her, the Project aims at facilitating the improved performance, not only by building back better infrastructure, but ensuring that the quality of services provided is raised.
She said the project would also support the Nigerian Government and the BAY STATES towards rehabilitation and improving the critical service delivery and infrastructure and livelihood opportunities.
“This project was designed within the framework of the Government’s commitment to continue to support the BAY States by providing additional and long term recovery and states.”
The Minister commended the efforts of the Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Plan Project Team, noting that the results achieved so far are pleasing.
“I will continue to encourage you to do more, mindful that though we’ve made significant gains in the process of the recovery and development of the region, there remains a lot to be done. And this is reflected in the new target for beneficiary numbers in the additional financing phase of the project as well as the decision taken by the Nigerian Federal Government and the World Bank to extend the funding and duration of this project.” Farouq explained
For his part, Managing Director, North East Development Commission, Mohammed Alkali said the Commission, has been working closely with development banks and donor agencies to ensure that resources are used judiciously.
“In line with its mandate to coordinate the efforts of recovery and development in the North-East Region, we’ve been working closely with the multilateral development banks and donor partners to ensure that the resources are properly targeted to address the critical needs of the people as prioritized by them, in line with international best practices.
