Nigeria and Mexico are set to strengthen their diplomatic and economic relations through a renewed commitment to high-level ministerial exchanges, as both countries explore new avenues for cooperation across key sectors.
This development emerged during a valedictory visit by Mexico’s outgoing Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, following the completion of his nearly four-year diplomatic tenure.
The visit highlighted the growing partnership between Nigeria and Mexico established five decades ago.
Both nations are now seeking to expand collaboration through structured ministerial visits aimed at boosting trade, cultural exchange, and economic cooperation.

A statement issued by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Magnus Eze, noted that Odumegwu-Ojukwu commended Ambassador Ortiz for his strategic role in strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing trade diversification, and fostering economic partnerships between the two countries.
During his tenure, Ambassador Ortiz facilitated the establishment of the Nigerian-Mexican Chamber of Commerce and oversaw the inauguration of a Mexican honorary consulate in Lagos—both seen as key milestones in deepening diplomatic and commercial ties.
He also championed cultural and social initiatives, including advocacy for inclusive development and the empowerment of women and girls, while promoting dialogue across multiple sectors.
Speaking during the meeting, Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasised the shared cultural values between both nations and underscored Nigeria’s interest in learning from Mexico’s tourism sector.
“I am amazed when I go to Mexico because it’s a family-oriented country. We have shared values. So, we have to expand our bilateral relations in areas of trade, cultural exchange and so on,” she said.
The minister also revealed ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy to strengthen cultural ties, noting that Nigeria could benefit significantly from Mexico’s tourism expertise.
She wished the outgoing envoy well in his future endeavors as he departs with his spouse, Maria, and embassy officials.
In his remarks, Ambassador Ortiz expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for its support throughout his tenure, noting that bilateral relations had significantly advanced through sustained diplomatic engagement and structured dialogue.
Among key achievements, he highlighted improved agricultural cooperation under the SENASICA–NAQS framework, which has boosted Nigeria’s hibiscus exports to Mexico.
He also described Nigeria as a major voice in global affairs and a leading force within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The ambassador further commended the recent state visit of President Bola Tinubu to the United Kingdom, describing it as historic and indicative of Nigeria’s growing global relevance.
“I am sure that this historic event shows the importance of Nigeria in the international arena and the role it plays in regional affairs,” he said.
Looking ahead, both countries identified priority areas for expanded cooperation, including manufacturing, mining, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and the digital economy.
Nigeria and Mexico ultimately reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining strong political, economic, and diplomatic ties, with renewed momentum toward a more robust and mutually beneficial partnership.
