The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its condolences to the government and people of Zambia following the death of former President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 68.

In a statement released on Saturday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, conveyed Nigeria’s sympathies.

“President Lungu served the Republic of Zambia with dedication from 2015 to 2021, guiding the nation through key milestones, including infrastructure development and regional diplomacy, while upholding the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One Nation,’” the statement read.

The minister also highlighted Lungu’s efforts in promoting inclusivity and national unity, noting his administration’s appointment of Zambia’s first female vice president and his push for economic diversification.

Nigeria acknowledges President Lungu’s role in amplifying Africa’s collective voice on the global stage and his unwavering commitment to regional solidarity,” Tuggar said.

The statement concluded with a message of support: “We stand in solidarity with the Lungu family, the Patriotic Front, and all Zambians during this period of national mourning. Nigeria joins the international community in celebrating his life and legacy. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
