Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has facilitated the safe return of 13 Nigerian citizens rescued from a human trafficking network in Ghana, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana for its swift and effective role in facilitating the rescue and repatriation exercise.
In a statement issued by the Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols at NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa also expressed appreciation to the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for her continued support in providing transportation and other critical assistance during rescue operations involving vulnerable Nigerians abroad.
The statement noted that the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) carried out profiling of the returnees as part of the standard reintegration process, while NiDCOM provided logistical support to ensure their safe return to their respective states across the country.
The rescued Nigerians—comprising 11 adults and two infants aged four weeks and 16 months, were received on behalf of the NiDCOM Chairman by the Head of Operations in Lagos, Mr. Dele Ogunkanbi.
Dabiri-Erewa reiterated her concern over the rising dangers associated with irregular migration and human trafficking, warning young Nigerians to be cautious of unverified job offers and travel arrangements abroad.
Greater Public Awareness
She emphasised the need for greater public awareness to curb the growing menace.
An initial report further revealed that some of the rescued women and their children are currently receiving medical treatment and mental health support after being diagnosed with serious health conditions resulting from their ordeal.
The repatriation exercise was led by Ambassador Adeoye, Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders and partner agencies.
NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to working with local and international partners to combat human trafficking and ensure the safety, dignity, and reintegration of Nigerians in the diaspora.
