Nigeria Seeks Collaboration with Italy on Space Technology – Minister

The Nigerian Government has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Italian government in the realm of science and technology, leveraging the transformative power of space technology to drive socio-economic development in the country.

Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, made this statement during a visit from the Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Stefano De Leo, in Abuja on Friday.

Nnaji noted that the Ministry has utilized space technology to enhance environmental protection and improve agricultural efficiency, which in turn can help mitigate flooding and reduce conflicts between herders and farmers.

He emphasized the importance of this collaboration, particularly in addressing flooding issues exacerbated by climate change.

The minister pointed out that flooding in several Northern states is one of the pressing challenges facing the country, citing assessments from the space agency that revealed the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon had overflowed.

Earlier, De Leo stated that the purpose of his visit was to strengthen the partnership between Italy and Nigeria in science and technology. He urged Nigeria to leverage its leadership role in Africa to harness both human and natural resources for technological progress.
