He highlighted this during a press briefing while addressing recent global financial aid shifts.

Prof. Pate emphasized that Nigeria had anticipated a reduction in international aid even before the U.S. government formally announced its funding cuts to agencies that assist developing nations.

Despite the challenges, he expressed profound gratitude to the United States for its longstanding support, which has played a critical role in the country’s healthcare advancements.

“For the past 20 years or so, thanks to the generosity of the United States government and its people, many countries around the world have benefited from lifesaving interventions that have saved billions of lives from HIV, TB, and malaria,” said Prof. Pate.

He further noted that Nigeria acknowledges the rationale behind the U.S. government’s decision and respects its evolving priorities. “It is unwise for any country to think it can rely entirely on another country for the health and lives of its population,” Prof. Pate remarked.

The Nigerian government has reinforced its focus on strengthening healthcare systems, increasing domestic funding, and fostering partnerships to improve health services and biosecurity across Africa.

Prof. Pate also announced Nigeria’s ratification of the African Medicines Agency Treaty, a move that integrates the nation into a broader African market for locally produced pharmaceuticals.

Additionally, he highlighted investment opportunities in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, inviting American and global investors to explore innovations, tools, and technologies that the country has to offer.

“We are very open and confident that as the direction of the U.S. government evolves, Nigeria will continue to welcome genuine partnerships with the United States and other countries that share an interest in advancing humanity while respecting each nation’s interests,” Prof. Pate added.

In a statement by Tashikalmah Hallah, Special Adviser on Media and External Relations to the Coordinating Minister; the Nigerian government reiterated its commitment to prioritizing health.

“This focus has led to significant advancements and successes in the healthcare sector, reflecting the government’s determination to improve the well-being of its citizens”.
