Nigeria Targets 2027 for Full E-Governance Rollout

Nigeria has set an ambitious goal to digitise 75% of its government services by 2027 to improve efficiency, accessibility, and transparency in public service delivery.

The initiative, spearheaded by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), seeks to modernise key services such as passport applications, tax payments, licence renewals, and healthcare access.

Overcoming Past Challenges

Despite previous efforts, Nigeria’s e-governance adoption has faced significant challenges, including inadequate digital infrastructure, poor internet connectivity, and inconsistent regulatory frameworks. These issues have hampered the successful deployment of digital governance solutions in the past. However, the new strategy aims to address these setbacks through a comprehensive approach involving infrastructure development, policy reforms, and strategic partnerships.

Key Strategies for E-Governance Rollout:

Development of a Unified Digital Platform
NITDA is working on an integrated digital platform that will provide seamless access to government services, reducing bureaucratic delays and increasing convenience for citizens.

Expanding Internet Connectivity
A crucial component of the initiative is the deployment of 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables across the country, ensuring that rural and underserved areas have the necessary digital infrastructure to access e-government services.

Learning from Global Best Practices
To ensure effective implementation, Nigeria is studying successful e-governance models from countries like the United Kingdom and Kenya. By adapting best practices, NITDA hopes to create a tailored system that suits Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape.

International Partnerships
The Nigerian government is also seeking global collaboration to strengthen its digital transformation efforts. NITDA has engaged with the Ukrainian Embassy and other international partners to explore potential support in achieving its e-governance goals.

This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda, which aims to enhance service delivery, combat corruption, and boost economic growth through technology. The government remains optimistic that, with the right infrastructure and policy frameworks in place, Nigeria can finally achieve its long-awaited e-governance vision by 2027.

If successfully implemented, this digital overhaul could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s governance system, providing citizens with more efficient and transparent access to public services.
