Nigeria will host the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, sanctioned by Commonwealth Sport through the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, becoming the first African nation to stage the competition.
The event, featuring senior, veterans and U-23 categories, will take place in Lagos from August 9th – 14th, 2026.
The President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, said preparations were progressing steadily, covering venues, logistics, athlete services and partnerships.
He said over 24 Commonwealth nations had registered, adding that a pre-championship international training camp would also hold in Lagos.

“We are on track to deliver a world-class event that reflects Nigeria’s capacity to host major international tournaments,” Samuel said.
He described Nigeria’s selection as historic, noting the championships had never previously been held in Africa. Samuel said the bid process lasted over 10 months, with Nigeria emerging ahead of Australia, host of the federation’s headquarters.
He added that African Commonwealth nations presented a unified continental bid in support of Nigeria. On sponsorship, Samuel said the federation was positioning the event as a platform for youth development, engagement and sports diplomacy.
Samuel, however, called for increased government support to complement private sector contributions towards successful hosting. He said Nigeria’s hosting would stand out through development initiatives, cultural showcase and hospitality.
The federation president noted that para fencing inclusion would promote inclusivity, with support from stakeholders. Samuel expressed confidence in Nigerian athletes, noting improved performances following recent international exposure.
The championships, which promises to meet global standards, will hold at Rugby School Nigeria in Lagos. It was chosen for its modern facilities and proximity to hospitality centres.
