Nigeria to host First Africa Raw Materials Summit

Nigeria is set to host the first inaugural Africa Raw Materials Summit, a pivotal gathering that promises to redefine the landscape of the continent’s raw materials industry. This landmark event will bring together key stakeholders to discuss and shape the future of Africa’s resource sector.

The summit, themed “Shaping the Future of Africa’s Resource Landscape, ” will take place from the 20th to the 22nd of May 2025.

This was revealed in a press briefing with journalists by the Director General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The DG stated that the gathering will bring together researchers, policymakers, investors, industrial leaders, and key stakeholders across Africa and beyond to explore innovative ideas, foster strategic partnerships, and develop actionable solutions for unlocking the full potential of Africa’s raw materials sector.

“Over the three-day event, participants will experience the Opening Ceremony & High-Level Keynotes featuring top government officials, industry leaders, and international experts. Panel Discussions & Breakout Sessions on sustainable extraction, investment, industrialisation, and trade.

“Networking Mixers & Investor Matchmaking Sessions to connect stakeholders with funding opportunities. Raw Materials Innovation Exhibition showcasing the latest technologies and solutions in the sector. Regional Focus Sessions addressing the unique opportunities and challenges of East, West, and Southern Africa.

“Workshops on value addition & capacity development for strengthening Africa’s raw materials industry. A gala dinner & closing ceremony, marking a new transformation era for Africa’s resource landscape,” he said.

He added that the summit is a movement to reshape Africa’s raw materials industry and urges stakeholders to help drive industrial transformation, strengthen local industries, create jobs, and unlock Africa’s true economic potential by attending and participating.

“We encourage the active participation of key stakeholders across all sectors to ensure a comprehensive approach to raw materials development.”

The DG noted that Africa possesses a significant share of the world’s raw materials yet struggles with value addition, industrial transformation, and sustainable development, clarifying that the summit aims to address these critical challenges.

“The Summit’s theme highlights our collective vision to leverage Africa’s vast natural resource wealth for sustainable industrialisation, economic diversification, and global competitiveness,” he said.

Prof. Ike-Muonso called on media houses, policymakers, corporate entities, research institutions, and the general public to join hands in making the summit successful.

“Let us work together to chart a sustainable, prosperous future for Africa’s raw materials sector. As we count down to May 20-22, 2025, I call on all stakeholders to engage actively in this initiative. Let us seize this moment to redefine Africa’s resource landscape, drive economic progress, and secure our place in the global industrial ecosystem,” he added.

The Director of Corporate Affairs of RMRDC, Mr Chucks Ngaha, appreciated the effort of the media, which he described as invaluable, looking up to their partnership in making the summit a success.
