Nigeria To Host WBC Amateur Boxing Championship

The excitement is building up for the inaugural Yucateco World Boxing Council (WBC) Amateur Boxing Championship, scheduled to hold in Lagos in February 2025.

Africa’s premier boxing organization, Yucateco Boxing Promotions, will host this historic event at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium. The CEO of Yucateco, Omonlei Imadu, said that the event signalled a new dawn for amateur boxing in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.

Imadu said that the event would serve as a qualifier for the maiden WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup in Mexico later in 2025. He added that the event would feature athletes from Kenya, Uganda, Togo, Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Cameroon and Nigeria, all showcasing their talents.

“I am happy my promotion has finally made this happen; bringing the first ever WBC amateur tournament to Africa is not child’s play,” Imadu said. “I am most importantly very happy that this will be happening in my beloved country, Nigeria”.

“We are bringing the world to Lagos, and this truly delights me. The president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaimán and the president of Africa Boxing Union (ABU) Houcine Houichi, will be in Nigeria with their team for the event.”

Imadu, who also doubles as the president of the Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria (BPAN), said the Most Valuable Boxers in each weight category would be honoured. He said that they would be decorated with the prestigious WBC Amateur title belt.

“Aside from securing their spot at the maiden WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup, outstanding pugilists in each weight category will also have to keep the WBC Amateur title belt,” he added. “This has never happened before in amateur boxing in Africa.”

According to Imadu, other dignitaries expected at the event include the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Chairman of National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko.

He said Director -General of National Sports Commission , Bukola Olopade, as well as the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, would be present.
