Nigeria Trains Caregivers For Old People’s Home

The Nigerian government is organising trainings to equip caregivers with best global practices.

The Government has identified lack of professional caregivers, especially to the old people as a  major catalyst to the under development of social homes in the country.

The minister of humanitarian affairs and social development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Faruk stated this during a training of care givers working in old peoples homes from north west Nigeria, held in kano state.

She said, old people’s mapping conducted last year, revealed that, care givers lack the required knowledge to take care of those in social homes, according to global standards.

According to her, the Nigerian Government was committed to ensuring that, state governments establish more social homes, to cater for the needs of the elderly according to global standards

“Part of the recommendations after the mapping is the training of caregivers to equip them with the required knowledge to adopt international best practices,” she said.

The Minister was represented at the event by the director social development, Mr. Taiwo Ademola,

The executive secretary, Kano state emergency management agency, SEMA Dr. Saleh Aliyu Jili pointed out that, the Nigerian government in collaboration with kano state government had organized the training of the 50 participants to enrich their capabilities, stressing that plans are on to construct more new social homes in the state.

“Preparations had reached advanced stage for setting up new social  homes in kano as KNSG had captured it in the  2023 proposed budget.

Papers were presented on social work and development by professionals to achieve the desired objectives.

Degree Programme

The vice chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University kano, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa at the event disclosed that, the institution would soon commence degree program on social work and development, as no university offers the course in northern Nigeria.

He added that the national universities commission had approved the commencement of 43 masters and Phd programs in the university.
