Nigeria’s National Population Commission, NPC, in collaboration with United Nations Population Funds UNFPA, has launched the 2022 State of the World Population Report with a commitment to end gender-based violence, the neglected crisis of unintended and unwanted pregnancy in the country.
The Chairman, NPC, Mr. Isa Kwarra who highlighted the Nigerian demographics on women and girls population also said that this year’s State of the World Population in Nigeria shows a decline from 28 percent prevalence in 1990, 27 percent of teenagers in rural areas are likely to commence childbearing compared to 8 percent in the urban centres.
He added that “the centrality of concerns and attention is the circumstances that drive, surround, contribute, facilitate incidence of an unintended pregnancy, those most affected and the consequences thereafter which result in unwanted babies or unhappy incidents”.
Prosecuting perpetrators
The Nigerian Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Pauline Tallene also charged the stakeholders in the judiciary sector to rise to the expectations of citizens in prosecuting perpetrators of gender-based violence.
Other stakeholders also called for more collaboration on the need to end gender based violence in the country.
