The Nigerian Government has commemorated the 61st anniversary of diplomatic relations with Venezuela, celebrating more than six decades of friendship, solidarity, and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government noted that diplomatic relations between both nations were formally established on March 15, 1965, laying the foundation for a partnership that has steadily evolved through political dialogue, economic engagement, and cultural exchange between Africa and Latin America.

Over the years, Nigeria and Venezuela have maintained cordial relations built on shared historical experiences, including their struggles for national sovereignty and commitment to South–South cooperation.

Both countries have also continued to promote equitable global development while demonstrating mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty through sustained diplomatic engagement and bilateral consultations.

The statement highlighted that the two nations share strategic common ground as major energy producers and members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, a factor that has strengthened collaboration on energy policy and efforts to maintain stability in the global oil market.

Beyond the oil sector, Nigeria and Venezuela have explored cooperation in several areas including trade, aviation, education, and cultural diplomacy, reflecting a shared commitment to expanding the scope of their bilateral engagement.

As both countries mark 61 years of diplomatic ties, the Nigerian government expressed confidence that the partnership will continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.

It reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen strategic cooperation with Venezuela in areas that promote sustainable development, energy transition, and global peace.

The government also reiterated its commitment to strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations for the mutual benefit of their peoples and in the spirit of global partnership.
