Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, says the country will continue to back regional defence and Unity for the African continent.
He also called on Africa’s military leadership to deepen unity and cooperation in promoting peace and security.
Addressing the Gala Night of the African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit 2025 in Abuja, the minister praised the dedication of Africa’s military chiefs and urged them to sustain a shared vision for a secure and stable Africa.
According to a statement by the Personal Assistant on Media to the Minister, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, Matawalle said: “Nigeria will continue to support regional cooperation; together, we can build a peaceful Africa where every citizen can live in safety and dignity.”
He emphasised that Nigeria would continue investing in training, strengthening defence institutions, and promoting values such as democracy, fairness, and respect for human rights.
“Tonight, we are not gathered for war, but for celebration. We are here to reflect on how far we have come, to honour the sacrifices made for peace, and to remind ourselves of the important work ahead in building a safer and stronger Africa,” the Minister added.
Matawalle lauded the visiting defence chiefs for their tireless commitment to protecting sovereignty and regional stability, noting that their presence in Abuja symbolised the bonds and shared vision uniting African nations.
Key topics at the summit included enhanced border security, stronger counter-terrorism measures, the adoption of emerging technologies in defence, civil-military collaboration in logistics, and safeguarding Africa’s strategic waterways.
“Let us raise a glass, not only to the success of this Summit, but to the hope of a peaceful Africa where every citizen can live in safety and dignity,” Dr. Matawalle said, urging unity among Africa’s top military leaders.
The Minister wished all delegates a safe journey home and expressed confidence that they would carry with them fond memories of Nigeria’s hospitality and the cooperative spirit demonstrated at the summit.
