Renowned Nigerian actress Omoni Oboli has advised aspiring actresses not to act out of desperation. She shared this advice during a recent appearance on AY Comedian’s podcast, Glasshouse with AY.

“Don’t be desperate; it’s desperation that causes those things.” She highlighted the inevitability of success, reminding listeners, “Nobody is God, nobody can play God. When it’s your time, it’s your time, and nobody can stop it. If a man doesn’t give you a chance, if it’s your time, a woman will give you a chance.”

Commenting on the giant strides of Nollywood women, she said: “I am so proud to be a woman today in the Nigerian film industry. After the time I was scared to become a director, there are so many women who have come after that and are doing amazing. Women are on top of the industry now. It’s a thing of pride.”

Reflecting on her own contributions to the industry, Omoni noted, “There are so many people I have helped in this industry that will never mention my name, and I don’t care. I don’t lord it over the person. I don’t even remember that I helped you get anywhere because God used me. It wasn’t me; I was just a vessel, and if I refuse, He will use somebody”

She urged them to maintain integrity and prioritize self-respect, noting that desperation can lead to poor decisions that may negatively impact their careers in the long run. Oboli’s words serve as a cautionary note, reminding budding actresses that success in the industry requires time, commitment, and staying true to their values.
