Nigerian Amateur Golfers to Make Historic Debut at 2025 Qatar Open

The 2025 Qatar Open Golf Championship will feature two Nigerian amateur golfers for the first time in its 39-year history. This milestone follows the success of the “Rebuilding Trust: Showcasing Talents” golf competition organized by the High Performance Centre and Sports Leadership Hub (HPCSLH) of the Sports University of Nigeria in Doha, Qatar.

According to Dr. Bob Olukoya, HPCSLH director, Nigerian golfers were blacklisted by Qatari authorities in 2006 due to absconding incidents during prior invitations. However, through sporting diplomacy, the narrative is shifting, and Nigerian golfers now have renewed opportunities.

The top two finishers in a Nigerian qualifying tournament, scheduled from January 24-26, 2025, at an undetermined venue, will earn slots in the Qatar Open. The competition will feature a handicap limit of 9, aligning with the Qatar Open’s requirements. The winner of the Qatar Open will secure automatic qualification for the Qatar Masters, a prestigious DP World Tour event.

Mr. Olajide Bolaji, Technical Director of the Nigeria Golf Federation and PGAN Secretary, praised this development as a transformative opportunity for Nigerian golfers to showcase their potential on a global stage. The January qualifiers will include amateur golfers from Nigeria and the diaspora.
