The Commander of the Nigerian Army Corps of Signals, Major General Nosakhare Ugbo, has urged military commanders in the North-East to safeguard critical communication infrastructure, to strengthen efforts against security challenges in the region.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of the Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the appeal was made during an operational assessment visit to the Headquarters of OPHK in Maiduguri.

Operation HADIN KAI is the Nigerian military’s multi-service task force conducting counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

The visit, undertaken on the directive of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, aimed at evaluating and enhancing communication support for troops engaged in the campaign.

Major General Ugbo explained that “his mission was to personally assess the installation, maintenance, and security of vital communication systems across the theatre.”

“These communication assets are vital to sustaining effective coordination and command systems,” Maj. Gen. Ugbo emphasised.

He called on commanders to ensure the protection of installed Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilities and equipment, while assuring OPHK leadership of the Corps’ continued commitment to “delivering robust and innovative communication solutions” in support of the fight against terrorism.

In his response, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, described the visit as timely and commended the emphasis on communication systems, which he called “the backbone of successful operations.”

He pledged that all critical infrastructure would be safeguarded to guarantee sustained operational effectiveness “in the interest of regional and national security,” expressing optimism that the assessment would positively impact the overall mission.

The visit also featured an operational briefing by the Commander of the 57 Signals Brigade, Brigadier General Nelson Okafor, who highlighted recent progress in deploying communication equipment and ICT projects.

He reported that these initiatives have significantly improved command and control functions within the theatre.
