The Nigerian Army has tasked its officers on leadership development, saying training and re-training is a necessary tool for capacity building, which when employed, would enhance the performance of the officers and men of the Nigerian Army.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Gold Chibuisi, disclosed this at leadership training for senior non commissioned officers, affirming that it is necessary for the officers and men of the Nigerian Army to desist from activities and attitudes that are capable of portraying them as ignoble members of the society.

While declaring open the Leadership Awareness and Development Course 2/21 for Senior Non-Commission Officers of the Nigerian Army, held at the Headquarters of the 2 Division Nigerian Army, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonement, Odogbo, Ibadan, the GOC affirmed that training is a necessary tool for the officers and men of the Nigerian Army to recognise the significance of their ranks and carry out their civic responsibilities with all diligence and professionalism, according to the vision of the Chief of Army Staff.

He stated: “It’s a common belief that the best welfare for a soldier is training. For indeed when you train more in peace time, you do less in war. Training is a necessary tool for capacity building that will enhance the deficient performance of personnel in the discharge of assigned tasks.”

Chibuisi further charged the participants to make the best of the opportunities provided by the training and discharge their duties professionally.

In the same vein, the Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, Maj. Gen. Garba Wahab (Rtd.), asserted that leadership remains the brain behind any form of training in the Nigerian Army and officers are trained to be leaders, adding that the training would re-awaken the consciousness of the Army personnel to crisis resolution.

Wahab affirmed that although the officers are potential leaders in their own right, over the years, the belief had been eroded by a lot of issues, making the officers forget the significance of their ranks.

He noted that the training was organised to reawaken the officers on the need to develop strategies that would assist them in discharging their civic responsibilities, especially at this critical period of insecurity in the country.

Maj. Gen. Wahab said: “As a leader, in crisis situations, decisions are taken. The crisis requires decisions to be taken, if it doesn’t require a decision then it’s not a crisis. So, when a decision is to be taken, it is not everytime you have an officer or a senior person around, the junior ones should be able to take decisions that will stand the test of time.”

On his part, the Divisional Training Officer of the 2 Division, Brig. Gen. Umar Muazu, enjoined the officers to be professional in the discharge of their duties and position themselves for the task ahead.

Participants at the training were drawn from various divisions of the Nigerian Army across the country.
