Nigerian Army’s 1 Division records decline in security threats- GOC
By Asma'u Halilu, Kaduna
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 1 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Mayirenso Saraso says the command’s Area of Responsibility (AOR), has witnessed a significant drop in security threats.
Saraso, who is also Commander of Sector 1 Operations Fansan Yamma stated this at a week-long Leadership Awareness and Development Course for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) in 1 Division Area of Responsibilities, in Kaduna.
According to him, “We have embarked on robust operations under the guidance of the Chief of Army Staff. I am glad to declare that these operations have yielded remarkable successes leading to a marked decline in security incidents in our Area of Responsibility.
“This is as a result of concerted efforts by the division and sister agencies. Our troops will continue to dominate all threat areas to guarantee safety and security to all Nigerians.”
The GOC explained that efforts and investments that had been committed into organizing the seminar were a clear indication of the premium the Chief of Army Staff placed on quality leadership by SNCOS in the Nigerian Army.
“This is not surprising considering that our contemporary threats and operating environment demand astute and innovative leadership competences from our SNCOs.”

The GOC disclosed that the development course was designed to equip the SNCOs of the Nigerian Army (NA) with skills and mindset needed to better protect and preserve its cherished image.
“The course was structured to cover leadership framework, coaching, mentoring, social media and implications, customs, ethics, and traditions.
“Other areas are conflicts management, team building, team work, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, constitution and the Armed Forces, among others,” Saraso said.
Also, the Special Guest of Honour, the Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, retired Major General Garba Wahab challenged the non-commissioned officers to act as real leaders.
Garba said, “Nobody is going to wait for instructions to be given. Everybody is expected to be on the same page.”
“That’s why we are starting with the Chief of Army Staff’s Command philosophy, which is challenging everybody, this is the way I want actions, operations, behaviour to be.”
“And if you are able to imbibe that, it becomes easier for people to do their job without being prompted, and foster trust, foster integrity and accountability, because everybody is aware of what is expected of them.”
