Nigerian Defence Ministry to get veterans department -Perm Sec

As part of the ongoing reforms in the Federal Ministry of Defence, better days await Nigerian veterans as a department has been approved by the president in the ministry to be known as the Department of Veterans Services

The Parmanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Defence,Dr. Ibrahim Kana disclosed this during his Maiden interaction with Defence Correspondents at the Headquarters, Federal Ministry of Defence on Thursday, 12 May, 2022, in Abuja Nigeria’s Capital. See below:

The newly appointed Defence Permanent Secretary further disclosed that president President Muhammadu Buhari has also approved the payment of allowance for veterans and as part of the reforms, the ministry will also take the shape of the Pentagon to accommodate both civilian and military services.

The Permanent Secretary while applauding the federal government’s efforts so far in providing for the Armed forces said the ministry despite economic downturn enjoys 100 percent budget funding from the federal government.

“The President has given approval for reform of the Ministry of Defence into our own Pentagon, in this case there will be deployment of senior military officers working alongside Civilian staff”

My role as a permanent Secretary will not be directly involved in Operations but we’ll handle the policy aspect of the Ministry of Defence to ensure the best for our troops and the
Veterans, and people that have fought war for Nigeria, the president has given an approval for a whole department of veterans services, so I believe better days are ahead”.

Dr. Kana also disclosed that part of the reforms will also be  in the health services provided for the personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

A soldier who present himself may have to pay the ultimate price and wounded and even incapacitated, hence there must be a reforming of our health services department to provide quality health service to our personnel” Stated Dr. Kana.

The Perm Sec disclosed further that the reforms include the education of the children of the serving personnel of the members of the armed forces like the command and secondary schools. This he said will be done working in cooperation with the services under the Defence Headquarters.

In a remark during the meeting, the Director Press, Federal Ministry of Defence, Mrs, Victoria Agba Attah, said Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana wanted to extend a hand of fellowship to the press while calling on the media to come on board to help inform the public of the ministry activities on Defence matters.

The Permanent Secretary is the Chief Administrative Officer as well as the Accounting Officer of the Ministry and manages as well as coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Ministry and provides important advice to the Minister.
