Skin care experts in Nigeria have advised people to seek proper consultation before applying products on their skin.
The experts spoke at an event, “Global Skincare Consulta-thon,” to mark the 2025 Skin Care Awareness Month held annually in September.
The event was organised by The Aesthetic Clinic (TAC) in collaboration with other partners including Beauty Therapy Institute (BTI), Sundry Foods, Hygeia HMO among others.
The event aimed to carry out free skin care consultations for no fewer than 1,000 clients across its branches in Nigeria and abroad.
According to them, “This will help prevent conditions that can be detrimental to their skin and overall health, and also enhance their skin outlook.”
The Head Aesthetician, TAC West Africa, Mrs Gloria Ojo, said that awareness about skin care remained relatively low, resulting to misuse of products and poor attitude, generally, toward skin care.
Mrs Ojo said; “There was need for people to be guided on how to care for their skin.
“This require people to consult skin experts including dermatologists or aestheticians for diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions and general care of the skin.
“When it comes to good health living, many people do not know that most of the conditions we have internally, can present itself externally.
“For instance, we have something called hyperpigmentation around the neck area: some people, you see them having their neck darker than every other part of their face.”
“For most people, it is actually a sign of diabetes, but they will not know; however, when you have a consultation done, we observe those things.
“If you go to skincare professionals that are able to identify some of these presenting conditions, they will be able to let you know that something might be going on inside,” Ojo added.
Also, the Head of School, BTI, Ms Anulika Molokwu, said that the institute partnered the clinic to offer the services, so that people could understand the importance of taking better care of their skin.
Ms Molokwu said; “That is why we decided to offer this 1,000 free skin consultation to help people start on their skin care journey.
“Now, we need to remember that our skin is the largest organ in our body by weight and by surface area. So, it is important that we take better care of our skin.”
She highlighted certain lifestyles that people could adopt for a healthy skin, such as drinking enough water to hydrate the skin.
Ms Molokwu said, “Also, using very simple products, such as your sunscreen, to protect your skin barrier from the sun.
“Healthy eating is also very key because from the inside, it reflects on your skin on the outside, as well as exercising; all these things help to keep your skin healthy.”
In his remarks, a Data Analyst and Technical Assistant at TAC, Mr Raymond Nongu, said the ‘Global Consulta-Thon’ was the first of its kind organised by the clinic.
Mr Nongu said; “September, being the skincare awareness month, we took it upon ourselves, as industry leaders, to come up with this initiative, first of its kind, to give free consultation to 1,000 clients across the globe.
“We want to leverage physical consultation and tele-medicine platforms to attend to clients as part of our corporate social responsibility.
“So many people get into trouble using the wrong products because they do not know who to talk to, have the right platform or cannot afford it.”
According to him, the importance of skincare cannot be overemphasised as it is the first part people come into contact with.
“So, it is important you take care of your skin and ensure it is done the right way, “ Nongu advised.
