Nigerian First Lady Opens 39th Women’s Volleyball Club Championship

The 39th edition of the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship has commenced in Abuja, with the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, officiating the opening ceremony at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria.

The 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Club championship opening ceremony showcased the vibrancy of Africa and the colours and diversity of Nigeria.

Hundreds of fans packed into MKO Abiola Sport Indoor Hall, to witness the official opening of the 39th edition of the continent’s most prestigious volleyball event for clubs under the patronage of the Nigerian First lady.

The Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) president, Bouchra Hajij, as well as the Controller General of the Nigeria Customs Service were among other top dignitaries.

At the start of the ceremony, conceived by music, typical Nigerian dancers, art and culture as fans wept and bowed their heads with the emotion of the moment.

Sixteen clubs representing ten African countries symbolised what Africa meant by unity and the unprecedented development of the game in the continent.

This is the second time the West African giants hosting this tournament, last hosted it in 1996 but the first time coming to the city of Abuja.
