Nigerian First Lady To Inspire Girls At Volleyball Championship
The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, will address and inspire the girl-child at the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship, highlighting the importance of sports for young women and promoting their active participation.
Twenty four volleyball clubs across the top fourteen volleyball nations on the continent are hitting Nigerian soil for this landmark event, hosted by the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), at the iconic MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The event is scheduled to hold from April 1st – 14th.
Adding star power to the championship is Nigeria’s First Lady, who will serve as Grand Patron for the event. Sports enthusiast and Technical Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Samuel Onikeku, revealed the First Lady’s enthusiasm.
“Thankfully, the CGC and the team went to the (Aso) Villa and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON graciously accepted to open the ceremony and come to support our teams as the Grand Patron,” Onikeku said live on Talking Sports, Voice of Nigeria’s weekly premium sports magazine.
“The whole of Africa and the Confederation of African Volleyball – CAVB is very happy with it (the First Lady’s involvement), the President, Madame Bouchra Hajij and the Control Committee members, including the Board of CAVB are happy.”
“You know, Her Excellency, the First Lady is all about empowering the girl-child, and once the girl-child is empowered – you know that the country, the nation will be empowered,” he added.
“Again, looking at it, most of the laurels, the medals from the Olympics, Paralympics, African Games, usually come from our women and one cardinal quote from the First Lady is that: ‘the stars should continue to play and comeback to inspire other young ladies,” he added.
“We’ve made arrangements to make sure that twenty-five (25) academies are at the Stadium every day. We’re going to provide for them, we’re going to kit them, we’re going to feed them, we’re going to give them some allowances so that they’ll be inspired.”
“The next Champions will be raised when they’re inspired. You know so many of our female athletes were inspired when Tobi Amusan set the World Record. The whole country was emotional when she was crying on the podium, receiving her medal as the national anthem of Nigeria was being played.”
“It inspired a lot of people, women, girl-child and that is what we want to use this Championship to do,” he concluded.
Nigeria will be represented by Nigeria Customs and CNS Spikers at the African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship, which will take place daily at both Package A and B of MKO Abiola National Stadium.
